ABOUT THE CARL CHERRY CENTER FOR THE ARTS
Jeanne D'Orge, well known in Carmel's literary, artistic, and theater circles, founded the Carl Cherry Foundation in honor of her husband, Carl Cherry, in 1948, the year after his death. The non-profit institution was established as a cultural center to support experimental fine arts and help artists and scientists cross the standard borders of their disciplines.
The name of the foundation was changed a number of years ago to the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts. The Cherry Center is best known today for its collection of D'Orge paintings, art exhibits, challenging lectures, intimate concerts, and a wide array of theatrical productions.
Central to the mission of the Cherry Center are changing art exhibits in the two gallery rooms. The majority of these contemporary exhibits are selected, organized, and curated by the Cherry Center, and include paintings, ceramics, photography, assemblage, and sculpture. Up to ten exhibits are installed each year.
The Carl Cherry Center provides Monterey County with a venue for challenging and original theater, with productions staged by visiting local theater companies. A regular series of stimulating lectures, workshops, classes, and panel discussions also entertains and informs our audiences throughout the year. The Cherry Center also produces an array of concerts, recitals, and multi-media performances.
Dedicated to fostering curiosity and artistry in young people, the Cherry Center hosts an annual High School Art Exhibit, celebrating the talent of area high school student, and sponsors the annual Monterey County High School Poetry Awards.
The Cherry Center for the Arts is a 501(c)(3), tax-exempt, non-profit corporation with a board of directors of fifteen individuals dedicated to providing exciting, varied experiences in the arts.
