HISTORY

The Carl Cherry Center for the Arts was founded in 1948 by free-spirited, non-conformist artist and poet, Jeanne D'Orge, and her successful inventor husband, Carl Cherry. Their world was Carmel's emerging bohemian art community. They passionately enriched the community's culture through support of experimental and intellectual arts. Their home now preserves the salon tradition in Carmel, offering an alternative space where contemporary artists explore new ideas in a warm intimate setting.

Known as the Augusta Robertson cottage when it was built in 1890, the original house was acquired by Carl Cherry's mother in the 1920s and sold for $1 to Jeanne and Carl Cherry in the 1930s. The Cherrys took off the upper story, closed up all the windows, added a workshop (now Cherry Hall) and installed skylights throughout.

Today, rooms that were once living and lounging areas serve as exhibit space for local and national painters, sculptors, and photographers. A picture window overlooking a garden may be the backdrop for a poetry reading one night and a recital by a visiting string quartet the next.

The Carl Cherry Center is proud to stand as the only place on the Monterey Peninsula where you will experience little theater staged by an independent director, hear a fascinating talk by a guest lecturer, or be transported by exotic Japanese or Balinese music while being warmed by a river stone fireplace.
